Common questions about Embra, answered plainly. If something here doesn't cover what you're looking for, write us — there's a contact line at the bottom.
What is Embra?
Embra is a relationship-first network for law students and the lawyers willing to help them. Students apply to join; lawyers apply to mentor. Once you're in, you can browse the network, send a written request to start a conversation, and message one-on-one when the other person accepts. There is no feed, no public posts, no follower counts. The product is intentionally quiet.
How do applications work?
You fill out a short form on /apply/student or /apply/mentor and submit. We send a confirmation email so you know it landed. A founder reviews every application by hand — there is no automated approval. Most applicants hear back within a few days. When you're approved, we email you a link to set up your profile and start using the network.
I'm a law student — what should I expect?
Every mentor on Embra has been personally vetted by a founder. You can browse the directory, read each mentor's profile, and send a written request to start a conversation. Mentors decide who they say yes to, so a request might not be accepted — that's part of the design. When someone accepts, the conversation lives in your inbox. It's private; nobody else sees it.
You opt into everything. By default your profile is not visible to mentors browsing for students. You can turn on directory visibility from your profile settings if you'd like mentors to be able to find you.
I'm a lawyer — what should I expect?
You choose who you mentor. Students send written requests; you accept the ones that fit your time and interests, and decline the rest. Conversations are one-on-one and stay private — there's no public profile traffic, no inbound from random strangers, no obligation to reply to everyone. You can pause new requests anytime from your dashboard.
Every mentor's bar admission is verified before listing. We don't pull DMs into a feed, and we don't ask you to perform mentorship in public. The product is built to make the conversation feel like an email exchange with a thoughtful colleague, not a social platform.
How long does mentor verification take?
It depends. We check bar admission against state records and read your application carefully, which usually takes a few business days. If your bar status is straightforward and your application is complete, it can be faster. If we need to follow up — for instance, if your name on the application doesn't match the bar record, or your firm has moved — it can take a week or two. We send an email when the review lands either way.
I was declined — can I reapply?
Often, yes. If the decline was for a fixable reason — a missing detail, an early-application timing issue, a credential we couldn't verify the first time — we issue a re-apply link in the decline email that's good for 30 days. Open the link, edit what you need to fix, and resubmit. If you didn't get a re-apply link or the 30 days have passed, write to support@myembra.com and we'll take a fresh look.
How do I update my profile?
Go to your dashboard and click into your profile. Students and mentors both have an Edit page that covers the basics — name, photo, the parts of your profile that surface in the directory. Some mentor fields (firm, title, practice areas) flow through a quick founder review when you change them, so credential drift doesn't happen silently.
How do I delete my account?
Open Settings → Delete my account, type the confirmation phrase, and submit. Deletion is a soft delete first: your profile vanishes from the network immediately, your photo is removed, and you can't sign in again. Thirty days later, your account and all its data are permanently removed from our database — no take-backs after that. If you want to step away temporarily without losing your profile, use Pause my account instead.
How do I export my data?
Go to Settings → Download my data. You'll get a JSON copy of everything Embra holds about your account — profile fields, your messages, your connection history. We email you a private download link that works for 24 hours. The export is yours; we don't keep a copy of the export bundle past the link's expiry.
How do I unsubscribe from emails?
Every email we send carries a one-click unsubscribe link in the footer that turns off that category of email immediately. You can also fine-tune which categories you receive from Settings → Notification preferences. Account and security emails (sign-in confirmations, password changes, deletion confirmations) always come through — those aren't optional, because you need them to keep your account safe.
I have a question that's not here.
Write to support@myembra.com. A founder reads every email. We aim to reply within one business day; if your question is urgent, say so in the subject line and we'll prioritize it.
